Root Causes of Problems
At the root of psychological discomfort is the human tendency
to focus away from painful anxiety-provoking disturbance.
People try to ignore this material, to put it out of mind.

As a result of being ignored, the painful material lurks just below awareness, and plays a role in influencing behavior and life choices. Avoidance and unawareness engender ineffective coping strategies and creates problematic symptoms. Psychotherapy focuses on getting to the driving force behind psychological disturbances and symptoms.
